Private and Independent Colleges

There are many private and independent colleges around the country. Visit their individual websites for admission and application requirements. Most applications will require a written statement or college essay. Review this PowerPoint for tips and general information about writing a college application essay.

The Common Application gives you instant access to more than 800 public and private colleges and universities around the world, and is a seamless way to manage the application process. Fill out one application to apply to many schools, but be mindful that some colleges request additional suppliments you have to submit. The website also contains information on choosing a school, financial aid, and more.

The Coalition Application is another online application platform used by some univeristies. Create a MyCoalition account and use the college planning tools to learn, plan for, and apply to college.

HBCU -Historically Black Colleges and Universities are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community. HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. These institutions train young people who go on to serve domestically and internationally in the professions as entrepreneurs and in the public and private sectors.
